Srirampur - New Location for Golden Avatar Gurukula
We had obtained a new school premise in Srirampur in 2013 and over time, we have relocated from the original premise of the Golden Avatar Gurukula.
Feeding the kids
We are currently feeding the kids one hot meal a day. Ideally, we would like to feed them twice a day.
Physical Fitness Training
Due to the underdeveloped nature of the Srirampur area, where people work as scavengers, manual labourers or farmers, it has been hard work to build and create something of substance for them over time. At the same time, it has also given us the opportunity to understand the struggles of the people in this area on a day-to-day basis.
Some homeless people live in tents and those who have jobs live in tin sheds, working tirelessly for 12 to 16 hours daily, only to be paid an average of 1500 rupees at the end of the month. Due to desperate financial requirements to meet their daily needs, parents start pressuring their children to work when they turn a tender age of 11 or 12 years old. Having no hope in the educational system and no interest in long-term gratification, most young boys are sent to farms or other places to do some form of manual labour, while girls are prepared for marriage when they are 12 years old. Once the the boys reach 20 years old, they are pressured to get married and start a family.
If a young boy was still working in a low-paying job with no security and roaming around unmarried after turning 22, then their family members become hostile to the point where it becomes impossible for them to even stay in their own neighbourhood. The harsh prejudice from family members and neighbours leads the young boys to drown in severe depression. According to reposts from NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau), from the year 2022 to date, 2,013 men who were daily labourers or self-employed committed suicide, and 2,704 men took their own lives due to marital issues. The total number of suicides being committed is higher for men than women. Those who choose to live either become drug addicts or alcoholics.
Golden Avatar Gurukula has decided to help its neighbouring community by starting a new training program - Physical Fitness Training. Through personalised fitness training, young teenage boys and girls are encouraged to prepare for careers in the Army, Police, Physiotherapy, National Yoga tournaments, and sports like cricket. The younger children train for overall physical fitness and are given the basic educational requirements. Sudip, who is an old Gurukula student, has come back to share his experiences and is their current physical fitness trainer. He has won 3rd position in the All India Yoga Championship and got the chance to represent India in the International Asia Yoga tournaments, also winning a 3rd position in 2014. Sudip is also an experienced physiotherapist with work experience of fifteen years. He has received various medical degrees from the University of Bardhawan, a 2-year APT (Advanced Physiotherapy Technician) course from Kolkata, and an SBL course which is a specialised course on diabetes. Thanks to his care and diligence, a total of 13 young teenage boys have quit alcohol and drug abuse this year. The Gurukula aspires to do better for the community in the years to come.
